Adding Value to Others
Narrative
One of life’s pure joys can be adding value to others. Value comes in several currencies. Surely one we all think of is financial, but so too are pride, honor, respect, integrity, knowledge and passion.
Illustration discussions:
How are Mr. & Mrs. Stick helping? Are brother and sister both reading or is one reading to the other?
What is the book about ? Why are Mr. & Mrs Stick leaning forward?
Activities
Ask a kid to keep track of how many times in a day they did what they said they would do. At the close of the day ask what that number was and to give you a few examples, if not name them all! By doing what you say they can build trustworthiness.
Make a short list of what things would make someone else better. Add some dates (deadlines?) to complete these tasks. Success will add self-confidence and the action will help others.
Explain that earning integrity means always doing the right thing. Monitor and inform if you see a kid slipping from “doing the right thing”. Offer positive corrections when possible. You are setting some unspoken standards. These may not be absolute or extensive. Just setting both bounds and goals in this regard will be helpful for social development.
